Kenya-based direct air capture (DAC) trailblazer Octavia Carbon has unveiled their project Hummingbird pilot plant in Kenya’s Rift Valley.
This milestone project will remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and store it away permanently using Octavia Carbon’s innovative DAC+Storage system.
Initially, the pilot will be able to remove 250 metric tons of carbon, working towards a capacity increase that will enable it to remove 1,000 tons per year. For the CO2 storage needs of this project, Octavia Carbon is partnering with carbon mineralization company Cella.
Project Hummingbird, the first DAC plant in the Global South, will also see the debut of a digital monitoring, reporting, and verification (dMRV) mechanism tailored for the needs of direct air capture projects, which Octavia Carbon developed in partnership with Carbonfuture.
Octavia Carbon unveiled the pilot progress to key stakeholders who were visiting the location as part of an official Pre-COP29 Off-site Session with Early Movers in Kenya’s Climate-Positive Economic Growth Pathways.
The session was held with an aim to catalyze collaboration and explore pathways that would unlock financial support needed to advance projects like this one, a vision that aligns with the Nairobi Declaration that promotes the sustainable utilization of Africa’s natural resources for global decarbonization goals, boosting equality and common prosperity.
This news by Octavia Carbon follows the successful closing of a $5 million seed funding round that was co-led by Lateral Frontiers and E4E Africa, with participation from Catalyst Fund, Launch Africa Ventures, Renew Capital, and Fondation Botnar.
