Carbon removal-centered investment platform Forestry-Linked Securities (FLS) and engineering specialist DecarboEngineering have signed a strategic partnership to develop and deploy decarbonization projects in Paraguay.
The partnership was kicked off with the first collaboration called Project Alfheim, which is expected to produce nearly 13,000 tonnes of high-quality biochar each year by processing 35,000 tons of waste biomass.
To produce the biochar, Project Alfheim will utilize the pyrolysis technology developed by Haiqi Environmental Energy Group, which is partnering with FLS and DecarboEngineering on their mission of delivering a high-quality and scalable carbon removal solution.
According to the partners, this project will sequester approximately 25,000 tonnes of CO2 per year, generating clean, renewable energy to support local industrial partners in Paraguay and producing a WBC-certified biochar product that will be applied at local agricultural plantations.
Under the partnership, FLS will take the role of project developer and manager, structuring and aligning operations with institutional-grade standards.
DecarboEngineering, on the other hand, will provide technical insights across the carbonization value chain, helping FLS Group AG pick optimal project designs, technologies, and operational configurations.
With a professional focus on advanced thermochemical biomass conversion technologies, DecarboEngineering will provide expert oversight and design validation, ensuring the system is integrated seamlessly with a local partnering plant.
Alessandro Materni, Managing Partner of FLS Group AG, believes that this partnership is a major step for securing best-in-class technology deployment in the Paraguayan market.
He shared, “By combining our project development and structuring capabilities with DecarboEngineering’s technical excellence, we aim to set a new benchmark for carbon removal projects based on biomass carbonisation in the region.”

DecarboEngineering CEO Thomas Hoffman stated that his company is excited to support FLS Group AG in deploying robust and efficient carbonization systems.
“Project Alfheim demonstrates how advanced engineering, technology transfer, and appropriate system design enable local stakeholders to convert biomass waste streams into meaningful climate impact while creating tangible local economic benefits,” he added.
The two partnering companies are already evaluating options for future deployments as they join forces on supporting the development of climate-positive infrastructure in emerging markets.
