Carbon removal company Equatic has announced a new partnership with design and engineering firm Arup, where the two companies will collaborate to deliver the world’s first large-scale ocean CO2 removal facility.

The partners are joining forces to identify suitable locations for installing the patented seawater electrolytic carbon removal process developed by Equatic.

As part of the collaboration, Arup will be in charge of site assessment and project infrastructure development, coupled with planning strategies and obtaining permissions for the needs of the project.

This shared initiative will also welcome former Arup Group Deputy Chair Dervilla Mitchell to the Industry Advisory Board of Equatic, where she will provide her expertise as an industry professional.

Equatic has developed a novel approach to optimize the ocean’s capacity for atmospheric CO2 absorption via an electrolytic process that happens with the help of a specialized facility.

Through a mechanism that includes seawater electrolysis and direct air capture, by transforming the CO2 into solid minerals, this carbon removal process offers a promising pathway for storing carbon dioxide away from the atmosphere for more than a century while simultaneously producing carbon-negative hydrogen.

With a mission of removing over 100,000t of CO2 annually and producing 3,600t of green hydrogen by 2030, while aiming for gigaton removal levels in the long run, Equatic is already working on introducing modular pilot plants in California and Singapore, where a demonstration plant is also expected to come online soon.

As the company embarks on the journey of scaling operations to a commercial level, its current focus is identifying suitable partners and locations for deployment that would put Equatic well on its way towards its long-term climate goals.

With a team of skilled experts and a global reach in operations, Arup is well positioned to complement the development plans of Equatic, as the two companies focus on advancing the carbon removal industry with a pioneering large-scale deployment of an ocean-based CDR facility.
