Arup To Deliver FEED For Tunneling On Aramis CCS Project In The Netherlands - Carbon Herald

Arup, a global engineering and sustainable development firm, has undertaken front-end engineering design (FEED) for the technical tunneling work on the Aramis project, a new carbon capture and storage (CCS) hub in the Netherlands.

Led by Petrofac, the project aims to deliver a 32-inch carbon dioxide (CO2) trunkline, covering onshore, landfall, and offshore sections, along with an offshore CO2 distribution hub platform.

According to a company statement, Arup provided in-depth design definition for the pipeline landfall tunnel, facilitating the tendering of an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract.

The team faced several construction challenges, including addressing complex ground conditions and devising a method to retrieve the tunnel boring machine after tunnel completion, the company said.

The Aramis project offers a crucial route to decarbonization for hard-to-abate industries across Europe.

It will provide the infrastructure required to transport captured industrial carbon emissions for permanent storage in depleted Dutch North Sea gas fields.

The pipeline will span sensitive areas, including one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes.

Mark Neller, Energy Leader at Arup for the UK, India, Middle East and Africa (UKIMEA) region, highlighted the significance of the Aramis project in advancing CCS systems across Europe.

He noted Arup’s contribution to designing the 1,25-mile (2 km) trenchless under-sea tunnel from the Port of Rotterdam.

Jemima Bruin-Bland, Arup’s Global CCS Lead, emphasized the importance of effective tunnel design for emerging CCS projects worldwide.

As part of a growing global CCS infrastructure, the Aramis project aligns with new European Union (EU) regulations aimed at reducing industrial emissions.

It is a flagship initiative for the Netherlands, reflecting the country’s commitment to achieving the EU’s decarbonization goals as outlined in the European Green Deal and the Dutch Climate Agreement.
