The Carbon Business Council has launched the Direct Storage of Biomass (DBS) Coalition, creating a new industry working group aimed at advancing the understanding, credibility, and responsible deployment of this carbon removal pathway.

Chaired by Keith Driver, a Partner at Leading Carbon/Clear Sky Limited, the DBS coalition is comprised of 17 member companies.

Its members include Blue Forest, Carba, Carbon Lockdown Project, Carbonsate, EcoEngineers, Graphyte, Isometric, Leading Carbon/Clear Sky, Living Carbon, Mast Reforestation, Nature Focus, Puro.Earth, Rewind, Tau Carbon, Timber Turn, Vaulted Deep, and Woodcache.

The coalition serves as a forum for collaboration among project developers, technology providers, and policy experts, providing a space for these stakeholders to align efforts on clarifying best practices, improving shared DBS understanding, and enabling informed decision-making for carbon credit buyers, policymakers, and other relevant stakeholders.

Direct storage of biomass refers to the process of durably storing organic waste materials, such as forest and agricultural residues or biochar, deep underground in safe and sealed storage sites.

This process locks away the CO2 trapped in the biomass material, preventing it from being released in the atmosphere for long periods of time.

Looking ahead, the DBS coalition will focus on several priorities, including publishing a comprehensive issue brief on how this pathway works, its place in climate and land-use policy, and what needs to be done to support its responsible deployment.

Additionally, the group will work on engaging and educating buyers and other entities on the role of DBS in a carbon removal portfolio, delving into topics such as its scalability, durability specifics, and potential social and ecosystem co-benefits.

The DBS coalition will also explore frameworks for the responsible sourcing of biomass material and long-term stewardship, covering aspects such as DBS integration with forest, agriculture, and land management practices.

This coalition is part of a broader Carbon Business Council initiative to scale carbon removal across air, land, rock, and water.

Each of the verticals under this initiative aims to cultivate deeper collaboration within pathways, fortifying the sector’s collective strength towards a unified carbon removal ecosystem.
