Avantium, a company specializing in renewable and circular polymer materials, will deliver another advanced high-throughput adsorption testing unit for Climeworks and their direct air capture (DAC) carbon removal technology.

This announcement follows a successful collaboration between the two companies, in which they created a custom-made, high-throughput adsorption testing unit that enhances the efficiency and effectiveness of testing new CO2 adsorption materials with Climeworks’ DAC technology.

Avantium’s testing unit introduced significant improvements in the DAC process, reducing the sample mass and the gas consumption by a factor of 25.

This reduction, in turn, translates into meaningful cost savings, simplifying operations for R&D teams, which often produce smaller sample amounts.

With its unique design, the novel analyzer allows for better comparability between reactors, since all samples are measured on the same sensors sequentially.

Throughout 2024, the testing unit operated with an uptime of 98% and limited downtimes required for maintenance, proving its reliability over a longer period of time.

For direct air capture trailblazer Climeworks, this advancement helps the company strengthen its quality control efforts, enabling the accelerated development and implementation of its carbon removal solution.

Commenting on the collaboration with Avantium, Jan Wurzbacher, co-CEO and co-founder of Climeworks, shared, “This agreement enables us to take a significant step forward in building out a testing environment of industrial quality and expanding our high-quality supplier ecosystem.”

He added, “Avantium’s high-throughput adsorption testing unit will enhance our ability to develop and test new materials and accelerate the deployment of our DAC systems on a global scale.”

On behalf of Avantium R&D Solutions, Managing Director Steven Olivier stated, “We take pride in our collaboration with Climeworks, a company that mirrors our dedication to sustainability and relentless innovation.”

“This partnership is a testament to our shared commitment to addressing the urgent need for scalable climate solutions. Together, we can make a significant impact on reducing significant atmospheric CO2 levels.”
