Commercial-scale Direct Air Capture (DAC) pioneer Climeworks has partnered with carbon management company CapturePoint Solutions LLC for the transportation and storage needs of the Climeworks facilities in Project Cypress in Louisiana.
The partnership will see CapturePoint transport captured carbon dioxide from the DAC facility located in Calcasieu Parish to a storage point in Class VI wells at the Central Louisiana Regional Carbon Storage Hub (CENLA Hub), CapturePoint’s sites located in Vernon and Rapides Parishes.
Project Cypress is one of the first DAC technology centers being developed with the support from the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Regional DAC Hubs program.
Located in Southwest Louisiana, project Cypress combines the trailblazing technology and services provided by industry leaders Climeworks, Heirloom and Battelle.
This DAC center hosts the systems of Climeworks and Heirloom, with CapturePoint handling the transportation and storage of the Climeworks portion of operations.
The CENLA hub, where the captured carbon will be stored, represents one of the largest onshore deep underground carbon storage sites being developed in the United States, said to have the capacity to permanently retire millions of tons of carbon.
Scheduled to be built in two stages, the Project Cypress Southwest Hub is initially projected to have a nameplate capacity of nearly 300,000 metric tons of carbon annually, with the second stage expanding the capacity to the remarkable one million tons (a megaton).

According to Daniel Nathan, Chief Project Development Officer at Climeworks, Louisiana is set to spearhead the development of the DAC industry in the US.
He commented, ‘”Not only does the porous subsurface in the area offer ideal geologic conditions for safe and permanent storage of carbon dioxide, the state boasts an experienced workforce with the expertise needed to develop and build large-scale projects like DAC.”
“We’re excited to share the momentum of this next step forward with CapturePoint,” he added.
CapturePoint’s CEO Tracy Evans shared that they are excited to collaborate on Project Cypress, ensuring that the CO2 captured from the facilities of Climeworks is permanently secured underground in the CENLA hub.
