EDF Renewables North America Partners With Skytree And Return Carbon On New Texas DAC Park - Carbon Herald

EDF Renewables North America has chosen Skytree and Return Carbon as its partners for developing a direct air capture (DAC) technology park in Texas.

The envisioned large-scale DAC location will aim to remove 500,000 tonnes of CO2 annually once the planned sites become fully operational.

Slated to come online in 2028, this cutting-edge project will represent the first wind-powered DAC park in Texas.

EDF Renewables North America selected its partners for this project through a Request-For-Proposal initiative launched back in 2024.

As part of the deal, Skytree and Return Carbon, in partnership with Verified Carbon, will collaborate with EDF Renewables North America (EDFR) for the development of large-scale DAC facilities that will capture atmospheric CO2, which will then be sequestered in geological storage sites in the Gulf Coast region.

This partnership will leverage the innovative Stratus DAC units created by Skytree, coupled with project development expertise from Return Carbon and CO2 storage services from Verified Carbon.

On its end, EDFR will integrate the modular DAC technology with a renewable power source, using excess renewable energy from its wind farms to power the carbon removal operations.

Return Carbon and EDFR have executed a Term Sheet for delivering renewable power to large-scale DAC facilities in Texas, and this shared effort is expected to result in the generation of cost-competitive certified carbon removal credits.

The Term Sheet is backed by a unique behind-the-meter Power Purchase Agreements (PPA) structure, which enables price stability while maintaining upside potential during peak electricity pricing, optimizing the revenue for EDFR’s renewable energy parks, and gaining competitive access to energy.

Gabe Messercola, Associate Director, Capital Improvements at EDF Renewables, commented, “A key part of EDF Renewables’ strategy is to drive progress by accelerating the shift towards decarbonization. Direct Air Capture (DAC) can play a key role in the creation of a sustainable energy future, but the industry needs to scale quickly.”

He added, “Co-locating DAC development behind the meter will optimize renewable energy production, reduce exposure to power market fluctuations, and foster the growth of both industries.”
