Carbon solutions developer Skytree has acquired Dutch direct air capture (DAC) startup ReCarbn, enriching its portfolio with valuable technology innovations.
Additionally, the three co-founders of ReCarbn, Guus Dubbink (CEO), Ewout Ruijs (CPO), and Sophia Hummelman (CCO), will now take on leadership roles at Skytree, providing their expertise in research and development, product strategy, and commercial finance.
This announcement comes off the heels of Skytree’s expansion to two new locations in North America, coupled with a partnership on a major DAC hub in Texas called Project Concho.
Founded in 2022 at the University of Twente, a well-established DAC research institution, ReCarbn made notable progress in its first two years of existence, with its founding team developing a groundbreaking filtration and chemical sorbent circulation technology.
This patent-pending innovation has the ability to reduce the carbon capture costs, energy consumption, and the cycle time related to DAC technology.
Through this acquisition, beyond upgrading its tech portfolio and gaining valuable players on its team, Skytree will also tap into Recarbn’s network of key industry partners, including the University of Twente, paving the way for meaningful DAC collaborations in the future.
Commenting on this update, former ReCarbn CEO Guus Dubbink shared that this acquisition aligns perfectly with ReCarbn’s vision of scaling DAC to tackle the global climate crisis.
Dubbink, who will now take the role of R&D lead at Skytree, stated, “By combining our efforts, Skytree will be poised to solidify its position as a global leader in direct air capture, delivering technology that addresses climate change at scale and helps the world transition toward a carbon-negative future.”
