Home appliances giant Whirlpool has secured a diversified portfolio of durable carbon dioxide removal (CDR) through ClimeFi in a move that forms part of the firm’s decarbonization strategy.
To meet the corporation’s needs, ClimeFi structured an innovative portfolio that combines the firm’s offtake commitments with standalone options.
This approach will provide Whirlpool with a steady stream of high-quality CDR while allowing the company to keep a foot in the door for additional offtakes as its needs and the markets evolve.
For project developers, firm offtakes offer certainty and secure buyer commitment, supporting project investment, while standalone options offer early cash flow and a way to demonstrate market traction.
Paolo Piffaretti, CEO and Co-Founder at ClimeFi, commented, “This innovative structure reflects a shift in how corporations think about carbon removal procurement—firm offtakes give Whirlpool Corporation certainty of delivery, while the standalone options give them the flexibility to secure more volume later, on their own terms.”
The suppliers included in Whirlpool’s CDR portfolio
Whirlpool’s CDR portfolio includes four different suppliers work on marine CDR, Biogenic Carbon Capture & Storage (Bio-CCS), Enhanced Weathering, and Biochar.
As shared in the announcement, the mCDR will be delivered by CREW Carbon, and the Biogenic Carbon Capture & Storage – Bio-CCS will come from Gevo, while InPlanet will provide the Enhanced Weathering credits, and the biochar ones will be delivered by Liferaft.
Besides being chosen with a diversification approach in mind, these projects also reflect ties to Whirlpool’s business and geographic footprint.
Through this selection, the home appliances company prioritized projects that also support communities, such as rural and farming populations in the United States and Brazil.
