Wakefield BioChar has started issuing high-quality, Puro.earth-certified carbon removal credits from a new facility located in South Georgia, U.S.

The credits, offered through the Accend carbon removal marketplace, will go towards the sustainability strategies of buyers such as Booking.com, Rothschild & Co, Block, and Swiss Re.

As one of the fastest-growing environmental services companies in the United States, Wakefield operates a network of biochar facilities in Georgia, including the Wakefield Innovation Center and sites in Brunswick, Fitzgerald, and Valdosta (PCA Mill).

The latest facility to launch certified credit issuance is the Wakefield 4 site in Valdosta, South Georgia, also referred to as WB4.

In line with the company’s three other sites, this facility also uses woody residues to create a CO2-dense biochar product that enables long-term carbon removal and can be used in regenerative agriculture and industrial applications.

Biochar is also found to improve the structure and fertility of soil, as well as its water retention capacity, especially in areas exposed to droughts and flooding.

Wakefield’s biochar product gets applied to farms and pasturelands and is used as compost enhancement or in industrial operations like metals processing. Through subsidized programs, the product is also made available to farmers in regions with high agricultural bankruptcy rates.

Positioned in an otherwise economically challenged region, Wakefield’s operations create employment opportunities for local communities. Currently, the company is supporting close to 100 jobs through mill partnerships, logistics, and downstream activities.

By engaging with buyers, Wakefield has been able to rapidly scale up the magnitude of its operations, transitioning from individual projects to a broader, multi-facility portfolio.

With each new operational facility, Wakefield strengthens the credit supply reliability, building a knowledge base for future projects and growing its reach through impactful initiatives.

The WB4 facility will rely on the company’s established approach of long-term industry partnerships and will apply the same practices already adopted across the other facilities, including the sourcing of feedstock; monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV); process control; and soil application.
