Brooklyn-based company Vycarb has secured $5 million in seed funding that will fuel the advancement of its innovative water-based CO2 removal and storage technology.

The round was led by Twynam, with participation from MOL Switch, Hatch Blue, Clocktower Ventures, Idemitsu, and SGInnovate

With this funding, Vycarb will unlock a new chapter in industrial decarbonization, delivering a tech solution with distributed carbon storage directly at the source that eliminates the need for costly CO2 purification, compression, or long-distance transportation.

Dr. Garrett Boudinot, Vycarb’s founder and CEO, stated, “Our mission is to make carbon capture and storage permanent, fully measurable, and scalable to address the urgency of the climate crisis.”

“This investment enables us to further build our expert team and expand deployments at more sites worldwide, particularly where traditional carbon storage solutions are too expensive or infrastructure-intensive to be practical.”

Vycarb’s system functions by converting carbon from a wide range of sources into dissolved bicarbonate in natural waters using readily available minerals.

The captured CO2, in turn, remains stored in the water in a stable form for a period between 10-100,00+ years, helping combat both atmospheric carbon pollution and the water acidification caused by it.

The company has developed a sensor-powered technology that measures the carbon capture, removal, and storage in situ in real time, making sure its operations align with the highest market quality and integrity standards.

This technology has already been successfully demonstrated in a number of pilots, including a landmark installation at Brooklyn Navy Yard in New York City, where it serves to permanently capture and store CO2 on the East River. This momentum has also enabled Vycarb to lock in high-integrity carbon sales agreements with industry giants like Stripe and Milkywire.

The company has teamed up with marine monitoring and verification firm at depth and CO2 management and utilization expert TOMCO, solidifying its ability to deliver an effective low-concentration CO2 storage solution via coastal or industrial waters.

Currently, Vycarb’s system can be integrated into bioenergy facilities, cement, steel, and power plants, as well as coastal ports, where it can help transform existing water infrastructure into a powerful climate change mitigation asset.
