Vopak and the Northern Territory Government of Australia have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to collaborate on the construction of shared CO2 infrastructure.

The MOU details the actions that both companies will take to advance the creation of a shared carbon import, storage, and handling terminal in the city of Darwin, Australia as part of the Middle Arm Sustainable Development Precinct.

With the increasing pressure for countries to meet their emissions targets, initiatives like this one are crucial in driving the transition to a greener economy. The construction of the new CO2 hub aims to meet the growing demands for carbon storage and recycling within the expanding decarbonization sector.

Eva Lawler, Chief Minister of the Northern Territory, stated that this project will aid in achieving the Northern Territory’s target of a $40 billion economy by 2030 and moving towards net-zero emissions by 2050.

The purpose of the CO2 import terminal would be to handle the importation, storage, and distribution of carbon dioxide as a facility that can be used by multiple users. The carbon dioxide, once brought in, will be stored in large tanks before being moved to a long-term underground storage site or recycled for reuse in various processes.

Vopak, a well-known Dutch company specializing in storage and handling services for various goods, will apply their extensive know-how to successfully deliver this important carbon hub. Chief Minister Lawler shared, “This agreement leverages Vopak’s global expertise in developing infrastructure solutions to accelerate the energy transition worldwide.”

Paul Kanters, Managing Director at Vopak Terminals Australia, commented on the occasion, “For nearly 20 years, Vopak has been contributing to the energy security and economic development in East Arm near Darwin city. This project not only signifies our ongoing commitment to growth but also contributes to playing a role in decarbonization ambitions for both the Northern Territory and Australia.”
