Carbon standards organization Verra has published revised guidance for projects seeking to label carbon credits under the Paris Agreement’s Article 6 framework and the aviation sector’s carbon offsetting and reduction scheme CORSIA, along with a new resource to help buyers choose the right type of credit for their needs.

The updated documents reflect the latest decisions by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), and draw on Verra’s accumulated experience implementing these labels, with the aim of giving stakeholders a more streamlined process for requesting and applying them.

Among the most significant changes to the Article 6 guidance, Verra introduced a new Article 6 Correspondingly Adjusted label to identify credits for which a host country has taken steps to ensure the mitigation outcome is not counted twice in national inventories—a key requirement for credits traded across borders under the Paris Agreement rulebook.

The update also clarifies the process for requesting Letters of Authorization from host countries and adds streamlined pathways based on Verra’s experience reviewing such documents.

On the CORSIA side, the revised guidance adds criteria identifying which credits are eligible for CORSIA’s second phase, covering 2027 to 2029—the scheme’s first binding compliance period for aircraft operators— and includes updates to insurance criteria and accounting representation requirements.

For credits with vintages from 2021 onward, an Article 6 Authorized – International Mitigation Purposes label is a prerequisite for CORSIA eligibility, making the two frameworks closely interlinked.

Verra also released a buyers’ guide titled “Choosing the Right Article 6 Label,” designed to help purchasers determine which label type is appropriate depending on whether they are buying credits for government use, voluntary market purposes, or compliance under CORSIA.

A supplementary checklist for project proponents to verify that their Letters of Authorization meet labeling criteria was published alongside the guidance.
