Newlab, a venture platform supporting critical technology startups, has announced a new innovation hub, this time in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Supported by a public-private partnership, the launch of the New Orleans hub is made possible with backing from Louisiana Economic Development (LED), the City of New Orleans, Future Use of Energy in Louisiana (“FUEL,” an NSF Engine), Louisiana State University, Greater New Orleans, Inc., and Shell.

This marks the launch of Newlab’s third US-based location, adding on to its original headquarters in Brooklyn, New York, and an office in Detroit, Michigan.

The platform has also managed to establish an international presence, collaborating with vital partners that helped its expansion into Latin America and Saudi Arabia.

Set to be hosted at the former Naval Support Activity (NSA) complex, the New Orleans hub will revitalize a location that previously served as a logistics center for the U.S. Navy, with the last military personnel leaving the base in 2011.

In collaboration with the city of New Orleans and local developers EMDRC Partners, Newlab is launching the new office to revive this historic site by creating an innovation hub for startups, fueling a significant economic impact in the state.

Intended to boost the advancement of trailblazing companies and technologies, the New Orleans hub will look to attract startups active in a number of sectors.

One of those sectors is solutions that would enable a sustainable industry. The hub is open to innovators who are developing low-cost hydrogen production and low-CO2 energy generation, as well as thermal electrification and grid resiliency through modern upgrades, energy efficiency, and alternative fuels.

A second area of focus is carbon management and utilization, covering startups working on enhancing CO2 removal, point-source carbon capture, and the utilization of captured CO2 for the production of high-value products like sustainable fuels, chemicals, construction materials, and more.

Lastly, the New Orleans Newlab site is open to startups focused on climate solutions for the shipping and maritime industry, such as alternative fuels, energy efficiency, infrastructure and operations improvements, and other upgrades that help address the emissions from this sector.
