Vaulted Deep Delivers Carbon Removal To Frontier In Record Time

Vaulted Wraps Up Its First Year On A High Note, Securing $32.3M Series A Funding - Carbon Herald

Vaulted Deep, a company specializing in geologic sequestration of organic waste for permanent carbon removal, has delivered its first set of tonnes as part of their offset agreement with Frontier in just four months after inking the deal.

The company, established in 2023, has already managed to remove 5,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide in its first year of operations and is now entering a phase of monthly carbon removal deliveries, an industry-first rapid delivery pace that generates third-party verified carbon removal credits.

In May 2024, Vaulted Deep signed an offtake agreement with the Frontier commitment, a decarbonization initiative founded by Stripe, Alphabet, Shopify, Meta, McKinsey, and a multitude of other industry leaders.

The deal, worth $58.3 million, entailed the removal of 152,480 tonnes of carbon between 2024 and 2027. In 2023, Frontier also made a 1,666 tons prepurchase from Vaulted, turning into the first customer of the emerging carbon removal company.

Vaulted has already delivered the first batch of removal for Frontier and will now continue with monthly deliveries as part of their long-term agreement.

The accelerated removal deliveries by Vaulted are powered by the standardized dMRV verification system developed by prominent carbon removal registry Isometric. This novel process cuts down the time for carbon removal credit verification from months to days.

Frontier’s Head of Deployment, Hannah Bebbington, commented on this achievement, “In just over a year, Vaulted delivered all of the tons from a small prepurchase and is now kicking off deliveries under our multi-year offtake agreement with Frontier buyers. By tapping into existing industrial technology and expertise, they’re deploying with the speed and volume needed to get carbon removal to gigaton scale.”

Vaulted’s carbon removal method utilizes organic waste produced by agricultural activities and livestock, as well as biosolids and paper mill excess material, turning it into a slurry that gets injected into deep disposal wells for permanent geologic storage.

The company currently has two operational injection sites, one in Los Angeles County and a second one in Hutchinson, Kansas, with plans to commission new wells that will be placed on relevant locations to enhance access to feedstock and optimize transportation and storage capacity.
