Varaha Registers Second Puro.earth Biochar Facility In India - Carbon Herald

Varaha, Asia’s leading carbon removal company, has registered its second industrial biochar facility with Puro.earth, the world’s largest carbon removal standard and registry.

The milestone follows Varaha’s first facility, registered in October 2024, which was recognised as India’s first Puro.earth-verified biochar project and rated “A” by external evaluators for integrity and impact.

The new facility, located in Southern India, produces biochar — a carbon-rich material created by heating agricultural waste, in this case corn shanks.

By turning crop residues into biochar, Varaha locks away carbon dioxide for centuries while also preventing emissions that would otherwise arise from waste burning or fossil fuel use.

Scaling Impact with Biochar

Varaha says the expansion demonstrates its growing role in putting India at the forefront of global climate innovation.

“With our second biochar facility, we’re doubling down on our commitment to high-integrity carbon removals that put India on the global climate leadership map,” said Madhur Jain, CEO of Varaha.

The credits are issued under Puro.earth’s stringent biochar methodology, ensuring full traceability and alignment with international best practices. Beyond carbon removal, biochar provides important co-benefits, including improved soil fertility, water retention, and support for local biodiversity.

Certification through Puro.earth ensures these projects deliver durable climate impact and meet the highest global standards for carbon removal,” said Benno Fuchs, Chief Operating Officer, Puro.earth.

The project is underpinned by Varaha’s advanced digital measurement, reporting, and verification (MRV) platform, which quantifies both the carbon sequestration and wider environmental benefits.

Together, these tools aim to boost transparency and confidence in carbon removal projects at scale.
