Value Maritime Wins Funding For Onboard Carbon Capture - Carbon Herald

The Maritime Masterplan 2024 has granted funding to Value Maritime and its collaborators within the ME2CC (Maritime Efficient & Easy Carbon Capture) initiative. This funding will facilitate the progression of a compact, modular carbon capture system designed for installation on the Samskip Kvitbjorn, an LNG-powered vessel that combines container and Roll-On/Roll-Off (ConRo) shipping capabilities.

The Samskip Kvitbjorn navigates a designated route originating in Rotterdam and extending along Norway’s western coastline to Hammerfest, a region recognized for its exceptional environmental sensitivity within Europe.

The consortium’s objective is to equip the vessel with Value Maritime‘s CO2 capture technology, thereby ensuring compliance with the stringent emission regulations mandated by the European Union (EU) and Norwegian authorities.

The core objective of the ME2CC project revolves around the development of a scalable, compact carbon capture system.

This system leverages patented methodologies to achieve a substantial reduction in both height and footprint, surpassing existing absorption technologies by up to one-third while concurrently maintaining a minimal pressure drop.

Captured CO2 will be offloaded at designated ports and subsequently transported to land-based CO2 hubs, after which it will be prepared for subsequent utilization in various applications. Value Maritime highlights that this modular and scalable system exhibits remarkable versatility, accommodating a diverse spectrum of vessel types, encompassing shortsea and inland shipping as well as large offshore vessels.

Moreover, the modular design facilitates seamless installation and removal, thereby enabling the implementation of leasing models for carbon capture technology.

Christiaan Nijst, Co-Founder and Director of the Value Group, said: “We are delighted to have been awarded this funding, which provides an important stimulus to the ME2CC project, and to the maritime energy transition.”

“The combination of low costs for shipping companies and the compact, modular nature of this solution makes it highly scalable and widely applicable.”
