French tubular solutions company Vallourec has signed a memorandum of understanding with Brazilian engineering and consulting firm Syngular Solutions to collaborate on carbon capture and storage projects in Brazil.

The partnership will focus on developing bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) and broader carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) initiatives, combining Syngular’s expertise in geological storage and project development with Vallourec’s industrial and technical capabilities.

BECCS involves capturing CO2 emissions from biomass-based energy systems and permanently storing the carbon underground in formations such as depleted oil and gas reservoirs or deep saline aquifers.

Syngular Solutions CEO Luiz Rocha said the agreement is intended to help accelerate CCS and BECCS deployment in Brazil through closer collaboration between engineering, storage assessment and industrial infrastructure providers.

Brazil seen as strong market for BECCS growth

Vallourec said the agreement supports its broader strategy of expanding its position in the growing carbon management and energy transition market.

The company added that the partnership will allow it to engage with customers earlier in the project development process while contributing technical expertise from the outset.

According to Vallourec, Brazil offers strong potential for BECCS projects due to its large ethanol industry and the availability of suitable geological formations for long-term CO2 storage.

André Lacerda, Senior Vice President of South America for Tubes Activities at Vallourec, said the collaboration would help support the development of carbon capture and storage infrastructure in the country during the early stages of market growth.
