Calix has received positive news from the US Department of Energy (DOE), with the selection of two Leilac projects for grant funding.

These awards provide funding to conduct preliminary front-end engineering design (pre-FEED) studies, pending final negotiation and execution of agreements in the coming months.

Expressing his enthusiasm for the DOE’s announcement, Calix CEO and Managing Director, Phil Hodgson, stated, “Building on our progress in the US with Heirloom and Direct Air Capture, it is very pleasing to see our Leilac business progress in applications for our CO2 capture technology in the cement and lime sectors in the US, with major players.”

“We look forward to concluding the grant agreements and developing these exciting projects that have the potential to demonstrate industry leading solutions to produce both low-carbon cement and lime at commercial scale,” Hodgson said.

A project spearheaded by Roanoke Cement Company, a member of the Titan Group, in collaboration with Leilac US Inc., Amazon, and Virginia Tech, has been awarded $1.49 million.

Situated in Roanoke, Virginia, this project aims to explore the application of Leilac technology to directly capture over 500,000 tonnes of unavoidable process CO2 from cement Scope 1 emissions with high purity, thereby simplifying the requirements for post-capture equipment.

A project led by Mississippi Lime Company, in partnership with Leilac US Inc., Industrial Ally, and Nuada LTD, has been granted $1.5 million.

Located in St. Louis, Missouri, this project seeks to demonstrate the feasibility of net-zero lime manufacturing via carbon capture and the use of alternative fuels.
