Carbon capture technologies are spurring innovations as the pressing need for managing emissions is dawning on societies. A Mumbai-based start-up called UrjanovaC announced the development of a novel carbon capture technology, capable of capturing CO2 emissions from both industrial flue gas and ambient air in the presence of water.

The aqueous-based CO2 capture technology can also take away CO2 from industrial wastewater or any non-drinkable water source. The approach is spinning out of the Department of Science and Technology (DST) supported National Centre of Excellence in Carbon Capture and Utilization (NCoE-CCU) at IIT Bombay.

Founders of UrjanovaC are Prof. Vikram Vishal and Prof. Arnab Dutta, both faculty members at IIT Bombay, who got their inspiration from their willingness to develop an energy source with a minimal carbon footprint and the need for efficient CO2 management technologies. 

The technology is said to be more efficient, resilient and cost effective compared to other approaches. What contributes to that is the use of abundant material-based synthetic catalyst for the CO2 capture. The captured gas can later be converted to high-value minerals while the catalyst gets recycled.

The patented technology is at TRL 5 and apart from being sustainable, it is also said to work faster than other in-market technologies. Currently, the team is developing their first 3 tonnes-per-day CO2 capture pilot at IIT Bombay. Apart from the National Center of Excellence in Carbon Capture and Utilization, other commercial partners are Sprih, SINE, GDC at IIT Madras, Abhitech, and Venture Centre. Those collaborations are said to be assisting the team in scaling up the technology much faster.
