This week, the climate technology sector saw the launch of Universal Carbon GmbH, a specialist in direct air capture (DAC) technology and liquid carbon capture (LCC) solutions.

The launch comes as the company is named among the finalists for the 2026 edition of the Hamburg Innovation Awards, with winners to be announced on June 18.

Hamburg-based Universal Carbon develops infrastructure for the supply of biogenic CO2 and biomethane (RNG). From its perspective, CO2 is currently being emitted instead of monetized, which is why the company is focused on turning stranded carbon and methane streams into infrastructure-grade commodities.

To date, its team has successfully deployed 11 DAC systems, including what the company calls the most reliable and efficient plant in its class in Canada.

On its website, Universal Carbon shares that its engineers have developed and deployed the Airbus DAC technology both in Europe and Alberta, Canada.

The DAC system in Alberta was deployed at the Deep Sky Alpha site in November 2025. This system, powered by a solid amine-based filter, captures CO2 emissions directly from the atmosphere.

This success, along with the roster of other deployments, has helped Universal Carbon land a spot among the finalists of the Hamburg Innovation Awards.

The winners of the awards will be given the opportunity to pitch on the main stage of the Hamburg Innovation Summit, among other benefits, with high visibility in front of leading investors, corporates, and ecosystem players.

Set to take place across more than 5 stages and over 1,800 square meters of exhibition space, the Hamburg Innovation Summit is the largest innovation event in Hamburg and the metropolitan region. In a publication, Universal Carbon co-founder Leon Ketscher said that the company is honored to be selected as finalists for the Hamburg Innovation Awards.

He added, “Our mission is to build the technology & infrastructure needed to make biogenic CO2 and biomethane streams accessible, efficient, and valuable. With our LCC technology, we aim to unlock new pathways for carbon removal, e-fuels, and the circular carbon economy.”
