United Living Secures $334M Deal For UK Carbon Capture Pipeline - Carbon Herald

United Living Energy has landed a £250 million (~$334  million) contract to to provide a carbon capture pipeline for the HyNet North West decarbonization initiative.

Operating through its Infrastructure Services arm, United Living Energy — part of the broader United Living Group — has been selected by Liverpool Bay CCS Limited, a subsidiary of global energy technology company Eni.

The company will play a lead role in the CO2 transport and storage segment of the scheme. The United Living contract, set to run for three years, covers the engineering, procurement, installation, and commissioning of a 34-kilometer (21-mile) carbon pipeline.

The new pipeline will stretch from Ince, Cheshire, to Point of Ayr in North Wales, and will link up with an existing 24-kilometer (15-mile) pipeline to carry captured CO2 emissions from industrial sources to retired gas fields under Liverpool Bay, where the gas will be permanently stored.

This infrastructure is a critical element of the larger HyNet North West initiative, which is focused on building a low-carbon energy system across north-west England and north Wales.

The UK government granted formal approval for the pipeline’s development in March 2024, paving the way for its construction, future operations, and upkeep.

At launch, the pipeline is designed to transport up to 4.5 million metric tons of CO2 each year, with plans to expand that capacity to 10 million tons in the next decade.

United Living has already hired 50 people for the project and anticipates creating an additional 300 direct jobs within the next two years. A further 300 roles are expected to be supported across the wider supply chain.

Neil Armstrong, chairman and CEO of United Living Group, emphasized the importance of carbon capture and storage (CCS) in reaching the UK’s net-zero emissions goals.

“This project will also deliver huge benefits to the North West region, bringing major investment in local skills development, employment opportunities, and strong growth prospects for local businesses,” he added.
