Uniper has submitted a formal planning application to North Lincolnshire Council for a carbon capture plant as part of its proposed Killingholme Low Carbon Power (KLCP) project.
The facility will be constructed adjacent to Uniper’s existing Killingholme site, which holds an established Development Consent Order (DCO) for a new 550MW combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power station. The newly proposed capture plant is designed to intercept and store at least 95% of the carbon dioxide emissions produced during gas-fired electricity generation.
As part of the submission, Uniper outlined plans for a spur pipeline that will link the facility into nearby regional CO2 transport and storage networks, enabling offshore permanent geological storage developed by third-party operators.
The planning submission follows a public consultation held in late 2025. North Lincolnshire Council will now launch its own formal public feedback period as part of the statutory review process.
Supporting Clean Power Goals with Flexible Dispatchable Generation
The development comes as the UK seeks to balance rising electricity demand from transport, heating, and industrial electrification with strict net-zero power grid mandates.
“As electricity demand is set to rise, projects like KLCP will have an important role to play in supporting a secure, flexible and lower-carbon power supply,” said Neil Tomlinson, Uniper General Project Manager for the KLCP project.

“By combining reliable gas-fired generation with carbon capture technology, the project has the potential to help meet future energy needs while supporting the UK Government’s ambition for Great Britain to achieve a clean power system.”
Main civil construction on the consented 550MW CCGT station is slated to begin in late 2027. Pending necessary permits, regulatory approvals, and regional CO2 pipeline availability, Uniper plans to install the carbon capture infrastructure concurrently, targeting a commercial operation date as early as 2030.
