Uniper Plans Carbon Capture Power Plant In UK's Humber Region - Carbon Herald

Düsseldorf-based energy company Uniper (ETR: UN0) announced on Thursday plans to develop a low-carbon power station in the UK’s Humber region, focusing on carbon capture technology.

The project follows Uniper’s acquisition of development rights and land from C.GEN Killingholme, adjacent to its existing Killingholme power station.

The site has planning consent for a Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) power station, forming the basis for the proposed Killingholme Low Carbon Power Project.

The project aims to establish a state-of-the-art CCGT power station capable of quickly meeting rising electricity demands while integrating carbon capture technology to eliminate CO2 emissions during power generation.

Captured carbon would be transported via nearby carbon dioxide (CO2) pipelines and permanently stored in depleted offshore gas fields.

Uniper plans to collaborate with local stakeholders and communities before submitting a planning application for the carbon capture component later in 2025.

Both the CCGT power station and carbon capture systems are slated for completion by 2030, aligning with the UK government’s clean power ambitions.

Once operational, the station could generate at least 470 MW, sufficient to power approximately 1.1 million homes annually.

The company’s next steps include conducting Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) studies in 2025 to finalize the plant’s technical specifications and capacity.

Mike Lockett, Uniper’s UK Country Chair, said that the investment is a significant step toward its $8.2 billion (€8 billion) growth and transformation commitment by the early 2030s.

Developing flexible, efficient power generation like the Killingholme Low Carbon Power Project will bolster the UK’s energy security and transition to a low-carbon future while creating skilled jobs and economic growth in the Humber region, he added.

This initiative underscores Uniper’s strategy to balance energy security with sustainability, contributing to a cleaner, more resilient energy system for the UK.
