The UK Government, together with the British Chamber of Commerce in Indonesia (BritCham Indonesia) and Standard Chartered Indonesia, recently hosted a roundtable in London to explore carbon market opportunities in Indonesia, Indonesia Business Post reported on Monday.

During the event, which was held on November 20, the discussion focused on unlocking potential through policy development and public-private collaboration.

Key attendees included UK Minister for Climate Kerry McCarthy, Rino Donosepoetro, Chairman of BritCham, and Indonesia’s Special Presidential Envoy for Climate and Energy, Hashim Djojohadikusumo, as well as CEOs from Indonesia and other markets in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

Donosepoetro emphasized Indonesia’s focus on renewable energy, electric vehicles (EVs), and downstream industries to meet its 2060 net-zero target.

Indonesia’s energy needs are expected to grow by 42% by 2030, necessitating accelerated investment in sustainable solutions.

An estimated $235 billion is required to transition to a cleaner energy mix by 2030, while the downstream sector needs $600 billion to develop key commodities like nickel, copper, and tin.

However, challenges such as funding, policy alignment, and sustainable practices persist.

The roundtable also welcomed CEOs from 19 UK companies for discussions with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, who outlined his priorities for attracting investment and achieving 8% economic growth.

Topics included energy transition, education infrastructure, and health, aligning with Indonesia’s development goals.

The event underscored the importance of fostering partnerships to drive sustainable growth, drawing significant interest from UK business communities.
