The UK government has unveiled a new Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) mandate for the aviation industry.

The groundbreaking plan is designed to significantly reduce the environmental impact of air travel by clashing the greenhouse gas emissions of one of the hardest-to-abate sectors.

The plan mandates a gradual Increase in SAF use. Starting in 2025, airlines departing from the UK will be required to use a minimum percentage of SAF in their jet fuel. This percentage will steadily rise, reaching 10% by 2030 and 22% by 2040.

Furthermore, the mandate prioritizes SAF that delivers genuine environmental benefits. It also encourages the development of new, advanced SAF options with less reliance on specific resources.

The UK’s plan aims to create a thriving SAF industry while ensuring the mandate doesn’t lead to excessive price hikes for airline passengers. The government has measures in place to manage costs and minimize any impact on ticket fares.

A separate obligation is introduced specifically for “power-to-liquid” fuels, a promising SAF technology with even lower emissions. This fosters innovation and diversification in the SAF market.

The plan includes a review mechanism to monitor prices and adjust the mandate if necessary. This ensures a smooth transition and minimizes disruption for passengers and airlines.

By implementing this plan, the UK government aims to:

  • Reduce Carbon Emissions: The SAF mandate is projected to significantly cut carbon emissions from air travel, contributing to a cleaner environment.
  • Boost Job Creation: The plan is expected to create high-value jobs, particularly in the production of advanced SAF fuels.
  • Maintain a Strong Aviation Industry: The government emphasizes its commitment to a thriving aviation sector while prioritizing environmental responsibility.

This initiative positions the UK as a leader in promoting sustainable air travel and paves the way for a greener future for aviation.
