Perenco has announced the successful completion of the UK ’s inaugural CO2 injection test for carbon capture and storage (CCS).
This groundbreaking test, which involved injecting CO2 into a depleted natural gas reservoir in the Southern North Sea, represents a major achievement for Project Poseidon and aligns with the UK’s broader decarbonization goals.
The test was carried out using Petrodec’s ERDA, the first rig in the UK to receive an approved safety case for supporting CO2 injection.
The rig has now departed from the Leman 27H platform, marking the official conclusion of the test, which was conducted by the Project Poseidon Joint Venture, consisting of Perenco UK, Carbon Catalyst Ltd, and Harbour Energy.
The injection test proceeded according to plan, with 15 injection cycles completed into the Leman gas field and 11 CO2 offshore batch refills mobilized. The operation was carried out efficiently and safely, with no injection issues and the acquisition of high-quality data.
This successful test not only demonstrates the feasibility of carbon storage in depleted fields of the Southern North Sea but also shows that existing petroleum production infrastructure can be repurposed for cost-effective CCS projects.

The operation marked a collaborative effort across multiple organizations within the energy, CCS, and service sectors.
Perenco is optimistic that this success will help build confidence in the CCS industry, support the progression of regulatory frameworks, and establish technical standards for future CCS projects in the UK.
“This test has met our expectations, both in terms of technical execution and the quality of data gathered. These insights are instrumental as we move to the next phase of developing the Poseidon Project,” said Perenco CEO, Armel Simondin.
“The successful test highlights the role our industry can play in the UK’s decarbonisation efforts. The Perenco CCS team and our joint venture partners are now fully focused on interpreting the results and converting new insights into an evidence-based development plan for Project Poseidon.”
