The collaboration between the U.S. and India to advance Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) technologies has gained significant momentum, reflecting both nations’ commitment to addressing climate change.

Recently, the National Institute for Transforming India (NITI Aayog) and the Government of India, in partnership with key U.S. agencies, organized a workshop at The Oberoi in New Delhi.

The event was organized in collaboration with the US Department of State’s Bureau of Energy Resources, the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Carbon Management, and the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Commercial Law Development Program.

The workshop served as a platform for sharing vital insights and effective strategies aimed at promoting the implementation of CCUS technologies across India.

The discussions held during the two-day workshop focused on significant legal, policy, and regulatory issues concerning CCUS, as well as global standards, business prospects, and early opportunities for India, along with CO2 technologies and their uses in various sectors.

Other topics covered were mapping carbon sources and sinks, storage pilot projects, hubs and clusters (referred to as Carbon Valleys), and collaborative research and development in carbon management.

This partnership aims to leverage the advantages of the CCUS decarbonization method to tackle carbon emissions from major contributors in India, including industries like steel, cement, chemicals, and fertilizers, which depend significantly on fossil fuels and are particularly challenging to reduce.

The event featured a panel discussion led by Dr. V K Saraswat from NITI Aayog. The discussion was attended by Priya Prasad (US CLDP), Ingvild Ombudstvedt (IOM Law), Atanu Mukherjee (CEO & President, Dastur Energy), Dr. Ranjit Rath (CMD, Oil India), and Prof. Vikram Vishal from IIT Bombay.

The experts engaged in dialogue on aligning regulatory frameworks and policies to foster cooperation among nations for the advancement of CCUS.

The panel also addressed concerns regarding liability, safety, affordability, and the effects of international frameworks like CBAM.

As a key takeaway message from the event, the speakers highlighted the importance of data sharing to enhance collaboration between the U.S. and India, which could facilitate the large-scale implementation of carbon capture, utilization and storage technologies.
