Craft beer maker Tröegs Independent Brewing has been selected to receive a decarbonization grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to support a new carbon capture effort at its manufacturing operations.
The award is part of a nearly $3.5 million funding round distributed to small-scale industrial projects across Pennsylvania aimed at cutting facility emissions, improving local air quality, and lowering operational costs.
The grants are funded through the Reducing Industrial Sector Emissions in Pennsylvania (RISE PA) initiative, a $396 million statewide program backed by the US Environmental Protection Agency’s Climate Pollution Reduction Grants.
Tröegs and other recipient manufacturers will use the funds to install energy-efficient equipment and pollution abatement technology, helping modernize local industrial infrastructure.
Management of the small-scale award track is handled by the Pennsylvania Technical Assistance Program (PennTAP) at Penn State, which provides participating businesses with no-cost technical energy assessments.
Cutting Industrial Emissions And Lowering Energy Costs
The latest round of grants is expected to prevent roughly 2,500 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions during its first year of implementation – the climate equivalent of taking 575 gasoline-powered passenger cars off the road.
Collectively, the awarded projects are projected to save Pennsylvania manufacturers more than $470,000 in energy expenditures during their first full year of operation.

DEP Secretary Jessica Shirley noted that the RISE PA funding helps traditional and food-and-beverage manufacturers lower energy bills while driving regional job creation.
“Pennsylvania has a long industrial history, and these RISE PA grants are going to help manufacturers build their business with lower energy costs, the creation of more energy-focused jobs, and reduction of air pollution for surrounding communities,” Shirley said.
The announcement represents the second wave of awards issued under the small-scale program, with additional competitive grant rounds scheduled to roll out through 2029.
