Topsoe To Supply Technology For Major US SAF And Renewable Diesel Buildout - Carbon Herald

Topsoe has been selected as the technology provider for NXTClean Fuels’ proposed Port Westward renewable fuels complex in Clatskanie, Oregon.

Under the agreement, Topsoe will deliver its HydroFlex™, SynCOR™ and H2bridge™ technologies, along with catalysts and equipment, to support production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable diesel.

If the project reaches a final investment decision, the facility is expected to begin operations in 2029 and produce up to 50,000 barrels per day of renewable fuels. NXTClean Fuels anticipates it will be the largest greenfield SAF project in the US.

The selection reflects accelerating demand for sustainable aviation fuel. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) projects global SAF output will more than double in 2025, reaching 2.1 million tons, around 0.7% of projected jet fuel consumption.

Topsoe’s technology suite is designed to reduce the carbon intensity of the plant’s output. The integrated system will recycle biogenic propane and off-gases to generate lower-carbon hydrogen, while also providing excess hydrogen that can displace fossil fuels used for process heat.

According to the companies, these measures enable deeper emissions reductions across both SAF and renewable diesel production.

“Topsoe’s technology and solutions are enabling the growth of SAF in the U.S. while helping to reduce emissions within American aviation,” said Henrik Rasmussen, Managing Director of Topsoe Americas.

“This exciting project will significantly increase the production of SAF in the U.S. and will be the largest greenfield SAF project in the country.”

Christopher Efird, CEO & Chairperson of NXTClean Fuels, said: “The Topsoe technologies and catalysts dramatically reduce the carbon intensity of our fuels, making our products among the cleanest SAF and renewable diesel supplies in the world.”
