Thyssenkrupp Uhde To Equip MOPCO Ammonia Plants With Carbon Capture - Carbon Herald

Misr Fertilizers Production Company (MOPCO) has partnered with Thyssenkrupp Uhde to significantly upgrade fertilizer manufacturing in Damietta, Egypt.

The objective is to modernize three existing facilities, dedicated to the production of ammonia and urea, with a focus on environmental responsibility. MOPCO has chosen Thyssenkrupp Uhde to implement cutting-edge technology that will significantly reduce their carbon footprint and enhance production efficiency.

A key component of this initiative involves the deployment of a novel carbon capture and utilization (CCU) system.

This advanced technology will enable the capture of roughly 145,000 metric tons of CO2 annually, extracted from the exhaust gases of the current ammonia production process, and subsequently redirect it for use in urea manufacturing.

To further cut CO2 emissions, MOPCO intends to supplement their feedstock with green hydrogen, sourced from newly established water electrolysis units powered by renewable energy, ultimately targeting an annual output of 150,000 tons of green ammonia.

Thyssenkrupp Uhde will provide comprehensive support throughout the installation and startup phases, encompassing the integration of the planned green hydrogen supply.

Thyssenkrupp Uhde CEO, Nadja Håkansson, stated: “We are proud to enable our longstanding partner MOPCO to expand their business towards a greener production through our innovative carbon capture and low-emission ammonia solutions.”
