Climate Impact Partners has announced that the Sabah INFAPRO rainforest rehabilitation project in Malaysia, one of the longest-running restoration and rehabilitation projects, is now issuing verified carbon removal credits.

Developed and led by Face the Future in collaboration with Yayasan Sabah Group, the project has restored more than 25,000 hectares of logged-over dipterocarp rainforest to date.

For the marketing and sales side of operations, the project is partnering with Climate Impact Partners, which has also helped Face the Future restore and rehabilitate areas, host local training programs, conduct monthly forest patrols, and distribute seedlings to support wider rainforest restoration efforts.

The project is equipped with nearly 400 monitoring plots that provide data for a scientifically robust foundation for CO2 sequestration calculations, ensuring the high integrity of the issued credits.

In an independent assessment from BeZero, the Sabah project has received an A.pre overall rating, as well as an AA score for permanence.

The evaluation cities that the project has an exceptionally low exposure to reversal risk and notes its long and stable operating history, as well as strong alignment between independently measured carbon gains and peer-reviewed ecological research.

Having secured this landmark rating, the Sabah INFAPRO project is now one of the highest-rated Improved Forest Management (IFM) projects globally, reflecting a strong confidence in the durability of its carbon removal and the quality and integrity of issued credits.

The project’s large number of monitoring plots has enabled the observing and tracking of the full natural growth cycle of dipterocarp forests, the dominant native rainforest type in Borneo.

Unlike other IFM projects that monitor annually and issue credits in yearly vintages, the Sabah INFAPRO project adopted a large-scale monitoring approach at a landscape level.

This approach allowed the project to issue credits only after the forest passed through its most productive biological growth phase, ensuring that the CO2 gains reflected sustained, measurable sequestration rather than incremental annual estimates.

Additionally, this approach also validates that the available project credits represent verified, long-term carbon removal.

The project is registered with Verra’s Verified Carbon Standard under the name INFAPRO Rehabilitation of Logged-over Dipterocarp Forest in Sabah, Malaysia. The issued high-quality IFM credits are now available to buyers on the carbon market.
