Irish company NEG8 Carbon has been selected to join the Net Zero Innovation Hub for Data Centers (NZIH) programme, bringing direct air capture (DAC) technology closer to potential data center partnerships.

Backed by leading brands such as Google, Microsoft, Schneider Electric, APL, Danfoss, Data4, and Vertiv, the NZIH programme was established with the aim to address sustainability challenges within the data center sector.

Based in Denmark, the hub brings together leaders across the data center industry in Europe to accelerate the deployment of advanced net zero solutions.

By joining this initiative, NEG8 Carbon will now be able to showcase its DAC technology, which can be powered with the waste heat generated at data center facilities.

“The programme gives the company a pathway to engage with hyperscale data center designers and operators to pilot and deploy the NEG8 Carbon technology at their sites,” said NEG8 Carbon Founder and Managing Director Ray Naughton.

NEG8 Carbon’s DAC Technology Can Deliver Data Center Benefits

A majority of the power consumed by data center operations is emitted as waste heat, posing a major environmental threat. NEG8’s technology can use this waste heat to power a DAC process through which its systems capture atmospheric CO2 molecules.

This solution would provide data centers with an alternative waste heat application beyond district heating, which would be especially valuable to sites where connection to a district heating network is impractical.

Additionally, NEG8’s technology addresses the water consumption concerns around data centers, as with every tonne of captured carbon dioxide, the system also generates two tonnes of pure water.

Beyond these two benefits, the company shares that its solution comes with a third advantage of providing data center cooling as a by-product.

The CO2 captured with NEG8 Carbon’s technology can open up additional commercial opportunities for data center operators.

Once captured, it can be permanently stored as part of carbon removal projects for carbon credits or sold as a feedstock for applications including eFuels and other CO2-based products.
