The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is calling for nominations of experts that will serve as authors for its new Methodology Report on carbon dioxide removal (CDR) and carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS).
Specifically, the organization is currently looking for Coordinating Lead Authors, Lead Authors, and Review Editors.
Announced at the IPCC’s 63rd Plenary Session held in Lima from October 27 to 30, 2025, the 2027 Methodology Report on CDR technologies and CCUS will play a key role in the possible integration of these CO2 management technologies into national greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories and climate action plans.
At the IPCC Task Force on National Greenhouse Gas Inventories (TFI) Scoping Meeting held in October 2024, the CDR methods mentioned in the AR6 WGIII Report were established as the starting point for discussion, noting that some CDR methods might already be covered in existing IPCC guidelines.
The new Methodology Report aims to provide an updated and scientifically sound basis for the preparation and systematic improvement of national inventories in relation to the estimation and reporting of CDR and CCUS efforts.
Besides a section on CDR and CCUS, the new Methodology Report will keep the familiar structure of including an overview chapter and sections on general guidance and reporting, energy, industrial processes and product use, agriculture, forestry and other land uses (AFOLU), and waste.
In terms of CDR and CCUS, the outlined table of contents for the report indicates that additional information will be needed on the basic concepts, terms, and definitions, as well as specific information about CO2 capture from combustion and process gases, Direct Air Capture (DAC), utilization, transport, injection, and geological storage.

Additionally, the report is looking for expert input and additional guidance on issues across the other five sections, and nominations for authors should be sent to the relevant IPCC Focal Points provided on this list.
This call for authors presents a key chance for researchers, scientists, and industry experts to provide in-depth knowledge on these technologies, ensuring CDR and CCUS are fairly represented in national inventories going forward.
