UK company The Carbon Removers has secured nearly $1.3 million (£1 million) in support from the South of Scotland Enterprise (SOSE).
This investment is intended to catalyze further funding for the company and enable the expansion of its operations across the UK and Europe.
Specifically, this backing kicks off a fundraising campaign through which The Carbon Removers aims to obtain an amount that would unlock the removal of one million tonnes of carbon every year by 2030.
The Carbon Removers, formerly known as Carbon Capture Scotland, has developed a technology that tackles CO2 emissions generated from fermentation processes and operations at whiskey distilleries or biogas plants.
Once captured, the CO2 is then durably stored in solutions like deep underground storage or mineralization in built materials.
To date, the company has made notable progress on carbon removal projects in both the UK and Denmark, removing 100,000 tonnes of CO2 annually.
Founded by brothers Ed and Richard Nimmons, the company launched operations in a rural UK location with a population of just over 300 people. During its existence, it has grown into a carbon removal trailblazer and an influential player in the rollout of the Covid Pfizer vaccine, and it has also become the first UK company granted a storage license to remove CO2 in Denmark.
Co-founder Richard Nimmons shared that the company is proud to be based in southern Scotland and is excited to grow its carbon capture skills internationally.

SOSE Chair Russel Griggs stated, “We have worked closely with The Carbon Removers from the beginning of their journey, which included playing a vital role in the rollout of the Covid Pfizer vaccine. They have now grown and diversified into carbon removal and storage internationally—all from their original site in the tiny village of Crocketford, where they continue to be based.”
“They have demonstrated that a rural location should be no barrier to innovation, and we look forward to seeing The Carbon Removers continue to grow and prosper.”
