The Carbon Removers And Airfix Set Out To Scale BECCS Technology Across Europe - Carbon Herald

Two carbon removal trailblazers, Switzerland-based Airfix and The Carbon Removers (formerly known as Carbon Capture Scotland), have teamed up to boost the deployment of carbon removal technologies in the UK and Europe.

As part of this strategic partnership, the two companies will work together to catalyze the adoption of Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) mechanisms in the Netherlands, Denmark, and the United Kingdom.

Aligning with broader European climate targets, this collaboration will strive to deliver projects in the UK that will initially remove up to 30,000 tonnes of CO₂ every year by 2026, a target they plan to expand to a bigger magnitude by capturing 100,000 tons of CO2 annually across Europe by 2027.

The shared projects will center around carbon dioxide from biogenic sources, including agriculture waste and distillery and brewery leftovers, strategically developed to bring not only climate benefits but also economic growth in their local areas of operation.

For removal purposes, the captured carbon dioxide will be securely transported and stored permanently in different geological storage sites, including North Sea locations, or used towards carbonated construction materials.

Through this joint effort, Airfix and The Carbon Removers aim to stimulate decarbonization initiatives in key carbon dioxide removal (CDR) hubs in Europe that will generate high-quality carbon removal credits, contributing to the permanent removal of legacy CO2 emissions and making progress towards net zero goals.

The partnership will synergize valuable know-how from both companies, leveraging The Carbon Removers’ expertise in biogenic carbon removal along with Airfix’s proficiency in transporting and storing carbon dioxide and BECCS commercialization.

On behalf of The Carbon Removers, Chief Commercial Officer Sanjay Parekh commented, “By combining our capabilities in innovative CO2 solutions with Airfix’s expertise in carbon project management, we can amplify our efforts and accelerate the deployment of effective carbon removal strategies that benefit both the environment and local economies.”

Aymeric Reymond, Head of Project Development at Airfix, shared that the two companies have been openly collaborating over the past two years and expressed enthusiasm for their now officialized collaboration on scaling BECCS across the European market.
