The Carbon Dioxide Removal Mission Seeks Applications For First Global Student Prize For Innovative MRV Solutions

The Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) Mission Seeks Applications For First Global Student Prize For Innovative Monitoring, Reporting, And Verification Solutions - Carbon Herald

The Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) Mission – the first of its kind global coalition of governments dedicated to facilitating international cooperations for research, analysis, and demonstration of CO2 removals – has launched the SMART-CDR Competition (Student Monitoring and Reporting Technology for Carbon Dioxide Removal Competition). The Competition taps the creative power of university students globally to help solve one of the most complex and impactful challenges facing the CDR industry: monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV).

Teams of university and college students from around the world interested in proposing solutions that will help to advance this important clean technology can apply by September 9, 2024.

“Mission Innovation is helping to enable the development and deployment of carbon dioxide removal technologies. With this competition, we hope to advance innovation and inspire the next generation of carbon dioxide removal professionals.” – Mark de Figueiredo, Director, Carbon Dioxide Removal Mission.

Finalist teams will receive mentorship, build their networks, gain international recognition, and will be invited to present their idea at the global CDR Conference at the CLIMIT Summit (February 25-27, 205) to compete for the top prizes of USD $10,000.

The Competition is a partnership between the United States, Canada, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Austria, Japan, Norway, and the United Kingdom, with generous support from King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Centre (KAPSARC), King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST), King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies (OIES), and Carbon Engineering.

“The Oxford Institute of Energy Studies (OIES) supports research on the development of promising CDR solutions and overcoming challenges to their deployment, including issues pertaining to MRV. That’s why in addition to the cash prizes, OIES will offer winners the opportunity to collaborate on developing their ideas and disseminating project findings beyond the scope of the competition!” – Dr Hasan Muslemani, Head of Carbon Management Research, The Oxford Institute for Energy Studies.
