The Government of Canada has allocated CA$2.5 million (~US$1.8 million) in support for TerraFixing and its project for developing a direct air capture (DAC) technology that can operate in regions with cold temperatures.
Announced by Parliamentary Secretary Yasir Naqvi on behalf of the country’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Tim Hodgson, the funding will come from the Energy Innovation Program (EIP), administered by Natural Resources Canada.
Based in Ottawa, TerraFixing is set on a mission of delivering carbon removal solutions that can provide gigaton-level decarbonization results.
The company is developing a DAC technology tailored to operate effectively in cold climates, aiming to roll out a system that will initially have the capacity to remove 1,000 tonnes of CO2 on an annual basis.
The funding secured from the EIP program will go towards the creation of a DAC system that will be installed on a shipping container, where it will use structured zeolite packing to capture CO2 from the air while reducing the pressure drop and improving mass transfer.
This EIP financing forms part of the federal “Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage Research, Development and Demonstration” (CCUS RD&D) call for proposals that supports innovative carbon capture, transportation, and storage technologies with optimized performance and lower costs.
For TerraFixing, the EIP financial boost has enabled the company to grow its staff, kick off construction on a cutting-edge lab, and advance towards creating manufacturing intellectual property, paving the way for a pilot production line.

According to the Ottawa-based company, once deployed on a large scale, their cold-resistant DAC system will be able to reach the coveted price point of less than $100 per tonne of CO2 removed from the air.
In a broader perspective, TerraFixing’s work contributes towards Canada’s national climate targets, positioning the country among the leading decarbonization trailblazers.
Going forward, TerraFixing intends to leverage DAC projects to strengthen Canada’s supply chain independence from the US, creating job opportunities and improving the livelihoods of regional communities.
