Tencent has announced the top 50 finalists for its CarbonX 2.0 program, selected from over 660 applicants across 54 countries.
The initiative, launched to accelerate breakthrough climate technologies, offers RMB200 million (~$28 million) in funding along with technical support, mentorship, and opportunities to pilot solutions in real-world settings.
The finalists represent innovators from 12 countries and regions developing next-generation solutions to enable a net-zero world by 2050.
Bridging the Innovation Gap
The CarbonX program was created to address the so-called “Valley of Death” – the gap between early-stage discovery and commercial deployment where many promising technologies fail to scale due to limited funding and infrastructure.
Tencent’s approach integrates financing, partnerships, and global field testing to help solutions reach market maturity.
“The climate crisis is the defining challenge of our time,” said Davis Lin, Senior Vice President at Tencent.
“With CarbonX, we are not only investing in groundbreaking ideas, but also creating the pathways to turn them into real-world solutions. By bridging the gap between research and deployment, we aim to accelerate technologies that can store, transform, and reduce CO2 emissions at scale, laying the foundation for a truly low-carbon future.”

Building on the first CarbonX program in China, CarbonX 2.0 has expanded globally, focusing on four key areas:
- Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR): Pilots in Kenya testing scalable, low-cost methods for permanent CO2 removal.
- Industrial Decarbonization (CCUS for Steel): Projects in Serbia developing carbon capture solutions for heavy industry.
- Carbon Capture and Utilization (CarbonXmade): Transforming captured carbon into consumer products to create circular value chains.
- Long-Duration Energy Storage (LDES): Trials in the Maldives validating new flow battery systems for renewable integration.
Finalists will compete in early 2026 for funding and resources to pilot their technologies and measure real-world impact.
The announcement came during the CarbonX Summit in Shenzhen, where business and policy leaders emphasized catalytic finance and cross-sector collaboration as essential drivers of climate innovation.
