Technip Energies And GE Vernova Secure Major Contract For Net Zero Teesside Power - Carbon Herald

Technip Energies, leading a consortium with GE Vernova and Balfour Beatty, has received the green light to proceed with the Net Zero Teesside Power (NZT Power) project in the UK. This marks the world’s first gas-fired power station with integrated carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology.

The plant aims to capture up to 2 million tonnes of CO2 annually and produce 742 megawatts of low-carbon power, enough to meet the electricity needs of over one million UK homes.

Arnaud Pieton, CEO of Technip Energies, emphasized the project’s role as a milestone in advancing carbon capture technology. “This groundbreaking project underscores our commitment to innovation and sustainability while setting a new standard for low-carbon power generation.”

Maví Zingoni, CEO of Power at GE Vernova, highlighted the industry’s potential growth from flagship projects like NZT Power. “We look forward to powering the station with our advanced technology and supporting carbon abatement through efficiency and performance.”

The project’s financial close follows the UK government’s $27.6 billion (£21.7 billion) pledge for carbon capture initiatives. NZT Power, supported by the government, will contribute significantly to the UK’s climate goals, creating over 3,000 construction jobs and 1,000 operational roles annually. It aligns with the UK’s net zero emissions target by 2050 and aims to attract private investment, driving economic growth in Northeast England.

Technip Energies will integrate its Canopy by T.ENTM solution with Shell’s CANSOLV™ CO₂ Capture System. The plant will use GE Vernova’s advanced 9HA.02 gas turbine alongside other cutting-edge technologies, ensuring operational efficiency. GE Vernova will also provide maintenance services for 16 years. Balfour Beatty, as the construction partner, will deliver critical infrastructure for the project.

Leo Quinn, CEO of Balfour Beatty Group, called NZT Power transformational, noting its impact on regional economic growth and energy transition. “Today’s announcement takes us one step closer to realising this ambitious scheme.”

Elise H. Nowee, President of Shell Catalysts & Technologies, praised the alliance for combining expertise to meet the growing demand for scalable carbon capture solutions. “Net Zero Teesside Power marks a critical milestone in the UK’s journey toward net zero.”

The Carbon Capture Alliance, formed by Technip Energies, GE Vernova, Balfour Beatty, and Shell Catalysts & Technologies, underscores their commitment to long-term investment and innovation in the UK.
