Syzygy Plasmonics And Trafigura Sign Long-Term SAF Offtake Agreement - Carbon Herald

Syzygy Plasmonics has signed a binding six-year sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) offtake agreement with commodities trader Trafigura, marking a major commercial milestone for the deployment of electrified biogas-to-fuel production technology and advancing scalable pathways for aviation decarbonization.

The agreement covers the full production capacity of Syzygy’s first commercial facility, NovaSAF-1, located in Durazno, Uruguay, with initial deliveries expected in 2028. It also includes an option for Trafigura to purchase additional volumes from future Syzygy projects, enabling further expansion of low-carbon fuel supply to meet growing regulatory SAF blending mandates in Europe, the UK and other markets.

The project comes as aviation operators face mounting pressure to reduce lifecycle emissions while navigating tightening availability of conventional SAF feedstocks such as used cooking oil and agricultural residues.

Electrified biogas pathway supports carbon management goals

Syzygy’s NovaSAF™ pathway combines biogas feedstock with renewable electricity using its light-driven chemical reactor platform to produce Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO)-compliant SAF.

The technology has received ISCC pre-certification and is designed to deliver synthetic paraffinic kerosene with up to 90% lower lifecycle emissions compared to conventional jet fuel.

NovaSAF-1 will source biogas from the Estancias Del Lago dairy processing facility and utilize Uruguay’s renewable electricity grid, creating an integrated low-carbon fuel production model that also supports methane utilization and emissions reduction across the agricultural and waste sectors.

Trevor Best, CEO of Syzygy Plasmonics, said: “With a signed offtake agreement from a global leader like Trafigura, and after having successfully completed FEED engineering in December, we’re now ready to secure financing for the construction of NovaSAF-1 and move our technology from potential into production.”

Trafigura’s Head of Low Carbon Fuels Business Development, Jason Breslaw, said the partnership supports the company’s strategy to diversify SAF supply chains while enabling aviation customers to meet tightening emissions regulations in a cost-effective manner.

The project highlights the growing convergence between sustainable fuels, carbon management technologies and electrified industrial processes as the aviation sector moves toward long-term net-zero targets.
