A pioneering renewable energy project is underway high in the Swiss Alps, where cleantech company SYNCRAFT has broken ground on a climate-positive power plant in the Engadine region.

Located at over 5,250 ft above sea level, the facility is expected to be operational by summer 2025. The area, known globally for winter sports and first-class infrastructure, will soon host a next-generation renewable energy system designed to remove more carbon than it emits.

The Engadine plant will deploy SYNCRAFT’s proprietary reverse power plant technology to convert local forest residues into three outputs: renewable electricity, usable heat, and biogenic carbon (in the form of biochar).

This process enables the facility to generate energy while simultaneously capturing and storing carbon, offering a scalable method for long-term carbon dioxide removal (CDR) and net-negative emissions.

At the heart of the installation is the CW1800-500 system, which integrates efficiently with existing infrastructure, including boilers and Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) turbines.

SYNCRAFT’s smart automation platform will oversee the plant’s operations, coordinating multiple subsystems to ensure optimal performance even under the unique challenges of high-altitude conditions.

Engineering and assembly are already underway, including installation of piping, electrical components, and automation hardware, all tailored for alpine deployment. True to SYNCRAFT’s design philosophy, the Engadine plant is a modular and resilient system built to operate in geographically demanding environments.

Manufactured in Europe to high industrial standards, the plant demonstrates how decentralized biomass-based energy systems can provide both renewable energy and durable carbon sequestration.

Once operational, the facility will serve as a regional showcase for municipalities and energy providers seeking to combine local biomass utilization with climate-positive energy generation and long-term carbon storage.
