The Federal Office of Energy in Switzerland has launched a call for proposals, looking for solutions that target carbon emissions at point sources or draw CO2 from the atmosphere.

Special attention will be directed towards technologies that enable cross-sector synergies, combining several point sources or several energy domains.

The call comes in light of current projections that estimate that in 2050, around 12 to 14 million tonnes of hard-to-abate CO2-eq per year will still be generated, an amount that corresponds to about a quarter of Switzerland’s current greenhouse gas emissions.

Despite the growing number of innovations and solutions that tackle the planet’s carbon footprint, industries like cement production, international aviation, agriculture, and the burning of waste material will remain difficult to address when it comes to curbing emissions.

By supporting solutions that would tackle these challenging CO2 emissions, Switzerland aims to stay on track towards its goal of achieving net zero by 2050.

On its journey towards sustainability, the country will follow the recommendations laid out in a report put together by its Federal Council in May 2022, which outlines pathways for expanding carbon management efforts to capacities that will enable the capture and storage of half a million tonnes of CO2 in 2030.

To that end, Switzerland is now on the lookout for both atmospheric and point-source carbon capture proposals, spanning across several areas of application for the CO2 capture and its use or storage.

The call is open for pre-proposal applications by April 25, 2025, and the decision and results will be finalized at the end of May 2025.

After the initial round, approved applicants will have until October 31, 2025, to submit their full proposals, and the funding awards will be announced on December 19, 2025.

In order to provide more clarity on the purpose of the call and proposal requirements, on January 29, 2025, the Federal Office of Energy is organizing two introductory webinars.
