Svante Technologies, a pioneer in carbon capture innovation, has announced progress in its collaborative project with Mercer International, moving into the second phase of front-end engineering and design (FEL-2).
This critical stage — often referred to as Pre-FEED — involves detailed engineering, cost analysis, and risk evaluation to determine the commercial feasibility of the carbon capture project at Mercer’s Peace River pulp mill in Alberta.
Mercer, a global player in sustainable forest products, aims to reduce biogenic CO2 emissions from its operations.
The mill uses biomass sourced from responsibly managed forests, making it a prime candidate for demonstrating how carbon capture can complement renewable resource industries.
Reaching the Pre-FEED milestone marks a significant step toward a potential final investment decision and future deployment of the system.
The project underscores the rising interest in applying carbon capture technology across Canada’s pulp and paper sector — an industry poised to play a key role in industrial decarbonization.

“We are thrilled to advance this project with Mercer,” said Matt Stevenson, Chief Revenue Officer at Svante.
“This will demonstrate the viability of our technology for the pulp and paper industry in Western Canada, enabling carbon removal at scale by working in tandem with nature and highlighting our commitment to providing sustainable solutions for an industrial future.”
Svante’s second-generation capture system is tailored for challenging industrial environments, including pulp mills.
As industries seek to accelerate their climate commitments, the Svante-Mercer collaboration offers a timely blueprint for integrating advanced carbon capture systems into existing industrial infrastructure.
