Carbon capture and removal company Svante has entered into a partnership with Södra—the largest forest-owner association in Sweden—joining forces on a pilot carbon capture deployment at one of Södra’s pulp production sites.

Scheduled to launch in early 2026, this pilot will serve to evaluate the performance of Svante’s proprietary solid sorbent filters in capturing biogenic carbon dioxide emissions from Södra’s pulp production operations.

Through this effort, the companies hope to enable new circular value chains while contributing towards Sweden’s climate targets.

The pilot will be installed at Södra’s Värö site, where it will be operated in collaboration with the Swedish research institute RISE, which will provide support on trials centered around the liquefaction of the captured CO2.

Södra’s pulp production operations act as a renewable source of biogenic CO2 that has potential applications across many industries, including food, water purification, e-fuels, and the production of chemicals.

Svante’s technology will capture and refine this CO2, exploring new revenue streams and looking to boost the value of raw forest materials without increasing the volume of harvesting.

According to Mark Claessen, president of Svante’s business unit, Svante Solutions & Digital Services, this deployment has the potential to capture and remove over one million tonnes of biogenic CO₂ annually.

He stated, “We’re excited to work on this project to demonstrate how our sustainable high-performance capture technology can help decarbonize industrial operations at a commercial scale.”

The pilot has received partial funding from Industriklivet, part of the EU’s Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF) under the Next Generation EU program.

Besides aligning with Sweden’s climate strategy, the initiative also solidifies Södra’s long-term commitment to sustainable forestry and innovation.

Jenny Gotthardsson, General Manager at Södra Cell Värö, sees this partnership as an important step in strengthening the company’s competitiveness and the profitability of forest estates. “By conducting trials with Svante’s technology in our own environment, we’re building expertise tailored to our operations,” she added.

For Svante, this partnership represents the company’s first venture into the EU forestry sector, marking a confident step toward scaling biogenic carbon capture in pulp and paper production.
