Svante Technologies Inc. has advanced a planned bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) project at a paper mill in the southeastern United States to the feasibility study stage.

The project is being developed with an integrated sustainable packaging company following an initial screening and pre-feasibility assessment across several of the partner’s mill sites.

During the feasibility phase, the companies will carry out detailed engineering and design work, alongside cost estimates, scheduling analysis, and risk assessments to determine the project’s commercial viability.

Carbon removal from pulp and paper operations

The proposed facility is designed to capture and permanently store more than 500,000 metric tons of biogenic CO2 each year from mill operations. The biomass feedstock used at the site is sourced from sustainably managed forests, enabling the project to generate carbon dioxide removal (CDR) credits once the captured emissions are stored.

According to the developers, the credits will meet established monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) standards and are intended for organizations seeking to address Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions through high-durability carbon removal.

The project will deploy Svante’s solid sorbent carbon capture technology, which uses rotary contactor machines equipped with nanoengineered filters coated with specialized materials designed to selectively capture CO2 from industrial flue gas streams.

Captured CO2 is expected to be transported for permanent geological storage in the US Gulf Coast region, where existing regulatory frameworks for Class VI injection wells and suitable subsurface formations support long-term storage.

Project design also includes waste heat and water recovery systems intended to reduce additional energy and water requirements associated with the capture process.

The initiative forms part of Svante’s broader strategy to develop BECCS projects in the pulp and paper sector, where biogenic emissions from biomass processing present opportunities for large-scale carbon dioxide removal.
