Sustaera announced that it has achieved a major efficiency optimization for direct air capture (DAC) technology, unlocking a threefold cost reduction for this typically expensive carbon removal pathway.
According to the company, its proprietary electro-thermal DAC solution is able to pull CO2 from the air at 3-5x lower capital costs than alternative methods.
Utilizing nano-structured sorbent technology and integrated electric heating, the technology has now demonstrated operational efficiencies 3-4x higher than conventional thermal technologies.
Sustaera CTO Cory Sanderson explained that while thermal technologies max out at around 40% efficiency, their solution recently managed to achieve 90%+ efficiency, using far less capital than traditional thermal approaches, and the company intends to continue innovating.
With this breakthrough, Sustaera is confident it has carved a path for lowering the DAC price below $100 per ton of carbon removal, which would remove one of the main obstacles currently limiting DAC scaling.
As shared by Sustaera, this improvement will enable DAC technology to compete with other emerging carbon dioxide removal (CDR) technologies such as biochar.
This advancement introduces a third generation of DAC systems.
While the initial wave of high-temperature technologies was inflexible and unable to achieve carbon-negative operations, and second-generation solutions improved efficiencies but still required large and costly baseload power supplies, this third generation of DAC systems could actually lead to a more widespread adoption.
Ben Gardner, Chief Executive Officer at Sustaera, stated, “Developers can now capture carbon cost-effectively, whether for sequestration or utilization. The technology is beautifully simple. It delivers measurable results and is easy to scale—potentially even without a grid connection.”

Sustaera’s electro-thermal technology cleans the air of CO2 emissions, capturing carbon dioxide that can then be sequestered or utilized in different industries.
Beyond delivering carbon removal results, Sustaera’s proprietary systems operate water-free and even produce pure water as a byproduct, making them suitable for deployment in water-constrained areas.
Through these DAC tech advancements, Sustaera is now positioned to capture a significant share of the $100B+ carbon removal market in the coming decades.
