Strategic Biofuels has officially received a Class VI Sequestration Well Permit from the Louisiana Department of Conservation and Energy, marking a historic milestone for its flagship Louisiana Green Fuels (LGF) project.
The hard-fought regulatory breakthrough is the culmination of more than five years of rigorous development and a massive 16,000-page application process, signaling that the path to construction for the northeast Louisiana facility is finally clearing.
The permit stands out as a critical precedent for the Gulf Coast carbon management sector. It represents only the third draft Class VI permit ever issued by Louisiana authorities since the state gained regulatory primacy from the US EPA, and it is the first to be granted for a single project utilizing a multi-well injection design.
A Co-Located, Pipeline-Free BECCS Blueprint
The LGF project, situated in Caldwell Parish, is designed as an integrated 100 MW wood-fired power plant equipped with full-scale carbon capture and storage (CCS). Utilizing approximately 1.3 million tons of sustainably sourced forestry residues and sawmill waste annually, the facility will supply 75 MW of carbon-neutral, dispatchable electricity to the regional grid.
Crucially, the entire infrastructure loop is co-located. By pairing bioenergy generation, carbon capture, and storage at a single site, Strategic Biofuels completely eliminates the need for long-distance CO2 pipeline networks, a major point of friction for industrial-scale CCS projects nationwide.
The captured CO2 will be routed directly into a dedicated geologic reservoir located roughly one mile beneath the plant floor via three dedicated injection wells.

Engineered in tandem with oilfield service giant SLB, the subsurface storage complex possesses more than three times the capacity required for the project’s initial phase, opening the door for future regional expansion.
Beyond its clean power contributions, the facility is positioned to cash in on the premium voluntary carbon market. LGF aims to generate more than one million tons of highly durable carbon removal credits annually.
Through an exclusive commercial partnership with science-based carbon management firm Carbon Direct, these verifiable removal tonnes will be marketed directly to Fortune 500 companies and institutional buyers seeking high-integrity abatement assets. With engineering support from Kiewit and automation backed by Emerson, the project is rapidly transitioning from a bureaucratic endurance test into a premier operational blueprint for American BECCS deployment.
