The Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability, McKinsey & Company, and partners have launched a novel platform called the Climate Tech Atlas that indicates potential areas for global breakthroughs that can mitigate climate change and unlock trillion-dollar financial opportunities.

Currently in beta version, the Climate Tech Atlas was developed together with Breakthrough Energy, Elemental Impact, Speed & Scale, and Energy Innovation.

Organized with engaging visuals, this novel platform signals innovation potential across six different categories, including greenhouse gas removal, manufacturing, transportation, buildings, electricity, and food, agriculture, and nature.

For each of these categories, the platform highlights the emissions estimated by the IPCC by 2050, along with priority areas per category that could deliver game-changing climate results.

In the case of greenhouse gas emissions, the Climate Tech Atlas points to engineered, mineral, and biological carbon removal, as well as methane and nitrous oxide removal, as the priority areas with high innovation potential.

Across the six different categories, each potential pathway is depicted with innovation imperatives that demand rapid advancement in order to meet net-zero goals, moonshots, or the high-risk, high-reward opportunities, and tech categories that list established, emerging, and yet-to-be-discovered systems that can tackle issues related to the innovation imperatives.

The tech categories section includes entries like Alternative Fuels, Construction, Smart Buildings, Heating and Cooling, and many other relevant solutions.

For each of the tech categories entries, the platform is further enriched with trusted resources that enable a deep dive into each specific solution.

The selection of resources contains reports and published work from relevant industry authorities, including governmental institutions and leading universities.

Stemming from the observance that uncertain times produce the most lasting solutions, this platform is deliberately being launched now, when the planet is facing time-sensitive deadlines to address the climate crisis.

Rather than looking at climate innovations as an existential burden, the platform intends to show this sector as the potential trillion-dollar chance it represents, aiming to catalyze timely global decarbonization action.
